Field of the Invention The present invention relates to a method for improving the inter-symbol interference immunity of a high-speed data receiver. 2. Description of the Related Art For a transmitter to transmit a data stream, it must encode the data stream into a coded data stream. To accurately decode the coded data stream at the receiver, it is very important that the transmitter and receiver must have the same bit clock. If the receiver does not have the same bit clock as the transmitter, a portion of the coded data stream will not be correctly decoded. This phenomenon is referred to as inter-symbol interference (ISI). ISI is one of the major sources of distortion for high-speed data transmission systems. A conventional high-speed data receiver will now be described with reference to FIG. 1. A data stream is received by a clock data recovery (CDR) unit 10, which produces a recovered clock for a memory data access unit 20. The CDR unit 10 receives an input data signal 10, and its output is fed to a phase detector 20. The phase detector 20 compares the phase of the recovered clock output by the CDR unit 10 with the phase of a data strobe signal 10, and provides a phase-error signal 12 to a loop filter unit 40. The loop filter unit 40 uses the phase-error signal 12 to produce a control signal 14, which controls a voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) 50 for generating the recovered clock. The loop filter unit 40 can also remove high-frequency components of the phase-error signal 12. FIG. 2 shows a conventional phase detector. The phase detector compares the phases of an input signal 10 and a data strobe signal 10′, and outputs a phase-error signal 12 in accordance with the comparison.
